The Dolphins trade popular WR Wes Welker to the Patriots

The Dolphins acquired a 2nd and 7th pick in exchange for Wes Welker.  Welker will be hard to replace as he was one of the better receivers on the Dolphins.  Also, he was a good kickoff and punt returner for them.  It’s not puzzling that they traded him, but, I’m scratching my head wondering why in the world would the Dolphins trade him to the Patriots of all teams.  It’s going to hurt a little bit watching him play against the Fins from now on.

The Dolphins sign TE David Martin

The Dolphins have signed David Martin with the idea of probably starting him this season.  He played in 11 games (4 starts) for the Green Bay Packers last season and he caught 21 passes for 198 yards (9.4 avg) with 2 TD grabs.  He has speed to burn but he’s a tad injury prone.  The Dolphins are trying to trade Randy McMichael because of his off-field problems.

The Dolphins release two veteran players

The Dolphins have released OG Jeno James and DE Kevin Carter.  The Dolphins could miss James as he was their best run blocker and he has a very nasty mean streak.  He missed time due to injury last season as he only started 9 games.  In his three years in Miami he started in 39 games.  He was released because it seems like his knees are shot.  Kevin Carter and his agent just couldn’t agree to a contract with the Dolphins so the Fins just cut Carter loose.  Carter played in all 16 games last season for the Dolphins and he made 45 tackles, had 5.5 sacks, defensed a pass and had 2 fumble recoveries.

Reserve QB Shane Matthews retires

The Dolphins #3 QB after Culpepper went down has retired.  He played in 31 games in his career (22 starts) and he completed 492 of 839 passes (58.6%) for 4,756 yards with 31 TD passes and 24 interceptions (75.0 QB Rating).  He also carried the football 43 times for 101 yards (2.3 ypc) with 1 TD run.

The Dolphins cut three players

The Dolphins have cut G/C Seth McKinney, G Bennie Anderson and WR Eric Kimble.  Seth McKinney didn’t play at all last season due to injury.  McKinney has spent 5 seasons in Miami and he played in 61 games, 34 of them he started.  Bennie Anderson only played in 2 games for the Dolphins last season.  He started both of them.  WR Eric Kimble also didn’t play a down.  These guys were just taking up roster space and all of them will be easily replaced.
