The Dolphins didn’t waste any time signing Justin Smiley shortly after free agency began last night.  He will replace Rex Hadnot as the starter at right guard.  Smiley got five years and $25 million bucks to sign the dotted line.  He played in 8 games for the 49ers last season and he’s played in 56 games in his 4-year NFL career.   The 26-year old Smiley will improve the offensive line and he has nice size at 6’3″, 311 pounds.  The Dolphins are trying to remake the roster into a physical bunch and adding Smiley was a nice start.

The Dolphins have acquired nose tackle Jason Ferguson and a 6th round pick in 2008 from the Cowboys for a 6th round pick in each the 2008 and 2009 season.  The 33-year old Ferguson only played in 1 game last season and he made 1 tackle for the Cowboys due to injury.  Ferguson is a run stuffer at 6’3″, 310 pounds and he will improve the D-Line as long as he can stay healthy.  Ferguson has now played in 134 games in his NFL career and he has made 453 tackles, has 21.5 sacks, defensed 9 passes and forced 6 fumbles.  The Dolphins have really improved their defensive line with the acquisitions of Randy Starks and Jason Ferguson.

The Dolphins have signed linebacker Reggie Torbor.  The 27-year old has nice size at 6’2″, 250 pounds and he will likely be a starter for the Fins in 2008.  He played in 16 games last season for the Giants and he made 39 tackles, defensed 1 pass and had 1 sack.  Torbor has now played in 62 games in his NFL career and he has made 148 tackles, defensed 5 passes, forced 4 fumbles, has 5 sacks and 1 interception.  This was a good move for the Dolphins as Torbor will be hungry to show what he can do with a starting job.

The Dolphins have signed TE Sean Ryan.  The 27-year old Ryan is a big guy (6’5″, 265) that is a good run blocker.  He played in 10 games for the Jets last season and he caught 3 passes for 46 yards (15.3 avg).  Ryan has now played in 26 games in his NFL career and he has caught 9 passes for 90 yards (10.0 avg).  Ryan should help out the running game of the Dolphins with his physical style of play.

Defensive tackle Randy Starks has signed a 5-year, $21 million dollar contract to play for the Dolphins.  The 24-year old stands at 6’3″, 312 pounds and he should get a chance to start with the Fins.  He played in 14 games last season for the Titans and he made 16 tackles and defensed 1 pass.  Starks has now played in 60 games in his NFL career and he has made 132 tackles, defensed 5 passes and forced a fumble.  This was a solid move for the Dolphins as they are rebuilding the defense.

The Dolphins have signed free agent WR Ernest Wilford.  The 29-year old Wilford will give the Dolphins a big receiver that they’ve lacked as of late as he stands at 6’4″, 223 pounds.  Wilford played in 16 games last season with the Jaguars and he has caught 45 passes for 518 yards (11.5 avg) with 3 TD grabs.  Wilford has now played in 63 games in his NFL career and he has caught 141 passes for 1,994 yards (14.1 avg) with 14 TD grabs.  This was a nice signing for the Dolphins.

The Dolphins used a ton of running backs due to injuries this season with varying results.  Ronnie Brown was outstanding last season before he was injured.  Brown played in 7 games (all starts) for the Dolphins last season and he carried the ball 119 times for 602 yards (5.1 ypc) with 4 TD runs.  He also caught 39 passes for 389 yards (10.0 avg) with 1 TD reception.  Brown has now played in 35 games (33 starts) in his NFL career and he has carried the ball 567 times for 2,517 yards (4.4 ypc) with 13 TD runs.  He also caught 104 passes for 897 yards (8.6 avg) with 2 TD grabs.

Jesse Chatman played pretty well for the Dolphins last season.  He played in 14 games (6 starts) last season for the Dolphins and he carried the ball 128 times for 515 yards (4.0 ypc) with 1 TD run.  He also caught 27 passes for 161 yards (6.0 avg).  Chatman has now played in 55 games (6 starts) in his NFL career and he has carried the ball 207 times for 943 yards (4.6 ypc) with 4 TD runs.  He also has caught 37 passes for 276 yards (7.5 avg).

Samkon Gado split his season between the Houston Texans and the Miami Dolphins in 2007.  He played in 8 games (2 starts) in 2007 and he carried the ball 35 times for 104 yards (3.0 ypc) with 3 TD runs.  He also caught 4 passes for 47 yards (11.8 avg).  Gado has now played in 25 games (8 starts) in his NFL career and he has carried the ball 252 times for 942 yards (3.7 ypc) with 11 TD runs.  He has also caught 39 passes for 268 yards (6.9 avg) with 1 TD grab.

Rookie Lorenzo Booker made the most of his limited opportunities in 2007 for the Dolphins.  Booker played in 7 games (1 start) for the Dolphins last season and he carried the ball 28 times for 125 yards (4.5 ypc).  He also caught 28 passes for 237 yards (8.5 avg).

Patrick Cobbs played in 14 games (0 starts) for the Dolphins last season and he carried the ball 15 times for 47 yards (3.1 ypc) with 1 TD run.  He also caught 2 passes for 20 yards.  Cobbs played in 3 games previously in his career and he didn’t touch the ball.

Ricky Williams made a brief appearance in 2007 before tearing a chest muscle and missing the rest of the season.  He played in 1 game (0 starts) in 2007 and he carried the ball 6 times for 15 yards (2.5 ypc).  He has now played in 83 games (73 starts) in his NFL career and he has carried the ball 1,763 times for 7,112 yards (4.0 ypc) with 47 TD runs.  He also has caught 246 passes for 1,899 yards (7.7 avg) with 4 TD grabs.

Rookie fullback Reagan Mauia played in 16 games (9 starts) for the Dolphins in 2007 and he carried the ball 4 times for 5 yards (1.3 ypc).  He also caught 2 passes for 5 yards (2.5 avg).
