Jared Odrick is likely done for the season for the Miami Dolphins

Blogged under Big Dolfans News,Bloglockers,Front Page,Injury Reports,The Draft Report by admin on Thursday 21 October 2010 at 4:09 pm

22-year old rookie DE Jared Odrick is likely done for the year after breaking his left foot in practice yesterday.  He was just coming back from a fractured right leg.  Odrick has played in 1 game for the Fins this year and he has 1 tackle.  This has been a lost year for Odrick and they hope he doesn’t turn into a injury prone type of player down the line.

UPDATE:  (10/22/2010) – The Dolphins have placed Jared Odrick on the Injured Reserve List ending his season.

The Miami Dolphins pick inside linebacker Austin Spitler in the 7th round

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,The Draft Report by admin on Wednesday 28 April 2010 at 10:10 pm

The Miami Dolphins pick inside linebacker Austin Spitler with the 252nd overall pick (7th round) of the NFL Draft.  Spitler looks the part as he is 6’3″, 244 pounds and he runs a 4.72 40.  But, he was not a productive player at Ohio State.  He finished up with 38 tackles, 1 sack and 1 interception as a senior last season.  In his four years at Ohio State he finished up with 82 tackles, 1 sack and 1 interception.  Spitler has bust written all over his forehead as he will need a miracle to make the Dolphins’ opening day roster.  He will have to make it on special teams as he wasn’t even a good college football player.

The Miami Dolphins pick OLB/DE Chris McCoy in the 7th round

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,The Draft Report by admin on Wednesday 28 April 2010 at 10:02 pm

The Dolphins have picked OLB/DE Chris McCoy with the 212th overall pick (7th round) of the NFL Draft.  McCoy is 6’3″, 251 pounds and he runs a 4.68 40 so he is a good athlete.  He played in 13 games at Middle Tennessee State last season and he had 64 tackles, 20 tackles for a loss and he had 7 sacks.  He played in 46 games in his four years in college and he finished up with 108 tackles, 26.5 tackles for a loss and he had 11 sacks.  McCoy is too small to play end in the pros and it’s up in the air as to whether or not he can handle outside linebacker or not.  I have a feeling that McCoy will have to make it on special teams this season to earn a chance to play defense down the road.

The Miami Dolphins pick safety Reshad Jones in the 5th round

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,The Draft Report by admin on Wednesday 28 April 2010 at 9:56 pm

The Dolphins select safety Reshad Jones with the 163rd overall pick (5th round) of the NFL Draft.  Jones is a big guy at 6’1″, 215 pounds and he runs a 4.6 40.  Jones is a big time hitter but he sometimes misses tackles as he goes for the kill shot.  He is also a big of a gambler in pass coverage but he makes more than his fair share of outstanding plays.  Jones played in 13 games (all starts) at Georgia last season and he had 73 tackles, he broke up 7 passes, he had 4 interceptions and he forced 1 fumble.  Jones played in 39 games (27 starts) in his three years at Georgia in which he made 206 tackles, broke up 13 passes, he had 1 interceptions (174 return yards), he forced 1 fumble and he recovered 1 fumble.  Jones projects to play strong safety in the pros where his physical style will play well.  I really like this pick for the Dolphins as Jones should not have been available to them in the 5th round.

The Miami Dolphins select CB Nolan Carroll in the 5th round

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,The Draft Report by admin on Wednesday 28 April 2010 at 9:50 pm

The Dolphins have selected CB Nolan Carroll with the 145th pick (5th round) of the NFL Draft.  Carroll is 5’11″, 204 pounds and he runs a 4.49 40.  So the measureables are there for Carroll but it’s too bad that he doesn’t play up to them.  He is a very raw defensive back.  He played in only 2 games at Maryland last season making 10 tackles and defensing 1 pass as he went down for the year with a fractured right tibia.  He finished up his four year career at Maryland with 61 tackles and 9 passes defensed.  Carroll is very injury prone and he was likely drafted because he is a great athlete.  He will have to make the Dolphins on special teams until he can show that he can handle playing CB in the NFL.  This was a major reach by the Dolphins.

The Miami Dolphins pick OLB A.J. Edds in the 4th round

Blogged under Big Dolfans News,Bloglockers,Front Page,Injury Reports,The Draft Report by admin on Wednesday 28 April 2010 at 9:41 pm

The Dolphins have selected OLB A.J. Edds of Iowa with the 119th pick (4th round) of the NFL Draft.  Edds is 6’3″, 245 pounds and he runs a 4.7 40.  He is a good athlete and he is a big time asset in pass coverage.  But, he’s not much of a blitzer and he doesn’t bring a lot of thump against the running game despite his size.  Edds played in 13 games (all starts) for Iowa last season and he had 78 tackles, 4.5 tackles for a loss, he had 1/2 a sack, broke up 4 passes and he had 5 interceptions.  He played in 46 games (39 starts) in his four years at Iowa and he had 226 tackles, 14 tackles for a loss, he had 2.5 sacks, broke up 12 passes and he had 7 interceptions.  Edds will help the Dolphins immediately on special teams and as a coverage linebacker in passing situations.  But, if he’s over going to develop into a starting linebacker he’s going to have to develop a mean streak.

UPDATE:  (8/3/2010) – The Dolphins have placed rookie linebacker A.J. Edds on the Injured Reserve List due to a torn ACL in his right knee.  He was injured in practice.

The Miami Dolphins pick OG John Jerry in the third round

Blogged under Big Dolfans News,Bloglockers,Front Page,The Draft Report by admin on Saturday 24 April 2010 at 2:34 pm

The Dolphins picked OG John Jerry out of Mississippi with the 73rd pick overall (3rd round) of the NFL Draft.  He is a massive man at 6’5″, 332 pounds and he is a power blocker in the running game who often blows back who he is blocking.  Jerry will have to be coached up a little as far as pass blocking goes but at least inside he will have help more than likely.  Jerry played in 12 games (all starts) at Mississippi last season and he played in 49 games (46 starts) in his four years there.  I like this pick for the Dolphins who keep adding really tough, nasty ballplayers.  Look for Jerry to be a starter in the near future for the Fins.

The Miami Dolphins add DE/OLB Koa Misi in the 2nd round

Blogged under Big Dolfans News,Bloglockers,Front Page,The Draft Report by admin on Saturday 24 April 2010 at 2:28 pm

The Dolphins have selected DE/OLB Koa Misi with the 40th overall pick (2nd round) of the NFL Draft.  Misi has a non stop motor and he makes a lot of plays in the opposing backfield.  Misi will likely have to move to OLB because of his lack of size but he should be able to handle the switch because he runs a 4.6 40.  Misi played in 12 games (all starts) for Utah last season and he finished up with 71 tackles, 9.5 tackles for a loss, 5 sacks and he has forced 3 fumbles.  Misi played in 38 games (36 starts) in his three years at Utah and he finished up with 206 tackles, 26 tackles for a loss, 10.5 sacks, he batted down 8 passes and he forced 6 fumbles.  Misi should fit right in with the physical style that the Dolphins want to play starting this season.  I like this pick for the Fins.

The Miami Dolphins select DT Jared Odrick in the first round

Blogged under Big Dolfans News,Bloglockers,Front Page,The Draft Report by admin on Thursday 22 April 2010 at 11:53 pm

The Dolphins have selected DT Jared Odrick out of Penn State with the 28th pick in the first round of the NFL Draft.  Odrick is a big guy at 6’5″, 301 pounds but he tends to play too high which is never a good thing.  Fins’ coaches will be on him from day #1 about keeping his butt down when getting off the snap.  He played in 13 games (all starts) for the Nittany Lions last season in which he made 43 tackles, had 11 tackles for a loss, 7 sacks and he batted down one pass.  Odrick played in 44 games (31 starts) in his four years at Penn State and he finished up with 104 tackles, 25.5 tackles for a loss, 14.5 sacks, 5 batted down passes and he forced 1 fumble.  The Jets coveted Odrick and I wonder if the Dolphins really wanted him or if they just wanted to put the Jets on tilt.

The Miami Dolphins acquire LB Tim Dobbins from the Chargers

Blogged under Big Dolfans News,Bloglockers,Front Page,The Draft Report,Trades by admin on Thursday 22 April 2010 at 11:48 pm

The Dolphins have acquired 27-year old inside linebacker Tim Dobbins as part of their compensation for letting the Chargers trade up to draft RB Ryan Mathews.  Dobbins played in 14 games for the Chargers last season and he had 55 tackles, 2 tackles for a loss, he had 1 sack, forced 1 fumble, defensed 1 pass and he had 1 interception.  He has now played four years in his NFL career in which he has made 151 tackles, defensed 6 passes, forced 5 fumbles, had 1 sack and 2 interceptions.  This was a good move for the Dolphins as Dobbins will give them really solid depth at inside linebacker for the 2010 season.
